Arducam IMX519 install_pivariety_pkgs.sh fails to find package on Raspberry Pi 3B Bookworm kernel 6.1

Hi all, I recently picked up a 16MP Arducam imx519 and I’m trying to get it working on my Raspberry Pi 3B. When I run the install_pivariety_pkgs.sh script it fails with an error about being unable to find the corresponding package. I’m guessing the problem is that I need an older kernel — does anyone know the most recent version that should actually work?

Welcome! Before jumping to the kernel question, could you share a few environment details? Specifically the Pi’s hardware revision, which OS you’re on, and the kernel version. If you still have the exact error output from the script, that would help too.

Sure. It’s a Raspberry Pi 3B, hardware revision a22082. Kernel is 6.1.0-rpi4-rpi-v7. I’m running the install_pivariety_pkgs.sh script and it reports it can’t find the corresponding package — the package it’s looking for is imx519 – bookworm. I assumed that meant the kernel is too new.

Thanks, that clarifies a lot. Based on the kernel 6.1.0-rpi4-rpi-v7 and the Bookworm package target, the issue isn’t really that you picked the wrong kernel. Arducam hasn’t released the IMX519 camera driver package for Bookworm yet, so when the script goes looking for the imx519 package on Bookworm, there’s simply nothing published for it to find.

Ah, so it’s not an older kernel thing after all? What should I do then — is there a combination that’s known to work with this camera?

Right, it’s not a matter of finding the correct older kernel on Bookworm — there’s no matching package for Bookworm at all right now. The supported target is Bullseye OS with kernel version 6.1.21. If you burn Bullseye and make sure you’re on kernel 6.1.21, the install_pivariety_pkgs.sh script should be able to find the corresponding imx519 package.

Got it, so the takeaway is to move off Bookworm onto Bullseye with kernel 6.1.21. I’ll give that a try.

Exactly. To summarize the current conclusion: the IMX519 driver hasn’t been released for Bookworm yet, so Bookworm + kernel 6.1.0-rpi4-rpi-v7 has no corresponding package for the installer to grab. Use Bullseye OS with kernel 6.1.21 instead, then run install_pivariety_pkgs.sh again.
