Hi, I’ve got an Arducam B0423 UC-755 rev C (IMX462, IR-CUT) module on a Raspberry Pi 4 and I can’t get it detected at all. With dtoverlay=imx462 it doesn’t show up in dmesg or /dev, and libcamera / raspberry-camera both fail. I’ve tried Raspberry Pi OS Bullseye and Bookworm, both 32-bit and 64-bit, stock drivers and the custom Arducam drivers, and i2cdetect on all I2C buses finds nothing. The only thing that gives any sign of life is setting dtoverlay=imx290 — the sensor works then, but HCG doesn’t seem to be active and low light is bad. I also went through the Pivariety troubleshooting page for ‘imx462/B0444 cannot be detected’ with no luck. Any ideas?
From what you’ve described, it sounds like you were following the B0444 pivariety guide, but the B0423 is a different camera (IMX462 native), so the overlay and instructions from that troubleshooting page don’t apply the same way. There’s a separate quick-start for the IMX462 native camera. Try setting it up using this guide and see if the imx462 overlay gets detected: Quick start - Arducam Wiki
Thanks, I followed the B0423 / IMX462 guide. Still no detection when I set dtoverlay=imx462 — same as before, nothing in dmesg or /dev. If I switch the overlay to imx290 the sensor works, but I don’t get HCG mode or any of the enhanced features. So the sensor itself seems fine, it’s just the imx462 overlay that won’t detect it.
Just to make sure I’m reading this correctly: when you have dtoverlay=imx290 in config.txt, does libcamera actually open and preview the camera? Or does it only show up somewhere in dmesg? I want to confirm the imx290 overlay path is fully working before we chase the imx462 detection issue.
With dtoverlay=imx290, libcamera does capture a proper picture, so the preview/capture path works. The problem is the image quality — in low light it looks terrible. I assume that’s because HCG isn’t active under the imx290 overlay.
That matches what I’d expect — the imx290 overlay doesn’t expose the HCG control, so low-light performance will suffer. Can you share a sample low-light picture and describe the scene and lighting? That’ll help me judge whether this looks like normal B0423 behavior or something else.
Sure. Environment: Raspberry Pi 4, camera running with dtoverlay=imx290. I’ve sent you a zip with the sample pictures privately — it’s a dim indoor scene, mostly artificial light. Let me know if you need the exposure or ISO settings too.
Thanks, I’ve reviewed the photos you sent. To set expectations: the B0423 (IMX462) can’t match the B0444 in low light, at least not in all conditions, and part of that is because HCG isn’t available when you’re driving it with the imx290 overlay. Here’s a comparison sheet that shows the difference between the modules: Loading Google Sheets. For now the situation is: the imx462 overlay still doesn’t detect the camera on your Pi, while imx290 works but without HCG and with poor low-light output. If you have a B0444 available, I’d suggest testing the same scene with it — that may be a better fit for your use case. We can keep looking into the imx462 detection if you want, but based on what we have so far this looks like a B0423 vs B0444 performance gap rather than a config mistake.
