Arducam IMX219 B0292 won't focus on QR code at 140mm in AMCAP

Hi, I’m having trouble with my Arducam IMX219 B0292. I’m trying to get it to focus on a QR code at about 140 mm away, but it just won’t focus at that distance. It will focus closer and further away, but 140 mm is always out of focus. The specs say it will focus as close as 40 mm, so I expected this to work. I downloaded and tried the AMCAP app, but that didn’t help by itself. Here’s what the QR code looks like through the camera:

Any ideas?

Based on what you’re describing, the focus just isn’t adjusted for that 140 mm distance. The autofocus/manual focus has to be set through the Video capture filter → Camera control in AMCAP. Just opening AMCAP won’t change anything by itself.

Try this:

  1. Click Options
  2. Choose Video capture filter
  3. Click Camera control
  4. Disable the autofocus, then move the focus slider manually to control focus

The manual slider in AMCAP is what you need to hit that 140 mm distance. Let me know if that gets it sharp.

Thanks, but the manual focus control doesn’t give me enough adjustment to get 140 mm in focus. I went to Options → Video capture filter → Camera control, disabled autofocus, and moved the slider, but there just isn’t enough adjustment. I also reinstalled the driver (Windows driver 10.01.19041.3636), but it made no difference. Here’s what I’m seeing:

Is there anything else I can try?

Thanks for the details. For this camera the focus value range goes from 1 to 255. Please check whether the image stays out of focus across that whole range. If you sweep through every focus value from 1 to 255 and nothing gives a sharp image at 140 mm, that points to a hardware limitation or a defective unit rather than a software/driver issue.

So the next step is: go through the full 1-255 focus range while pointed at the QR code at 140 mm. If it is out of focus over the entire focus range, the camera itself likely needs to be changed out for another unit.
