Arducam Hawkeye camera not detected after libcamera update, missing arducam_64mp.json

Hi everyone. I’m running an Arducam Hawkeye camera on a Raspberry Pi and after updating to the latest libcamera release it just disappeared. libcamera-hello --list-cameras no longer shows the Hawkeye at all. If I revert to the previous version it comes back, so the hardware seems fine. I did notice something in the logs about a missing arducam_64mp.json file. Has anyone else hit this?

That sounds like a packaging issue in the newer release, but let’s confirm. Can you post the exact libcamera and libpisp versions you’re running, plus the full log output from when the camera fails to register? That will show exactly where it’s dying.

Sure, here are the versions I’m on after the update:

libcamera v0.3.2+27-7330f29b
libpisp version v1.0.7 28196ed6edcf 29-08-2024 (16:33:32)

And here’s the log:

[0:15:41.408524609] [12661] INFO Camera camera_manager.cpp:325 libcamera v0.3.2+27-7330f29b

Thanks, that log is very clear. The sensor arducam_64mp has no static properties available in the camera sensor properties database, so it warns about that first. Then the IPA proxy can’t find arducam_64mp.json for the rpi/pisp module. Because that config is missing, the camera helper is never created, the pipeline can’t load a suitable IPA library, and registration ultimately fails with Failed to register camera arducam_64mp 6-001a: -22.

Right, and rolling back to the previous libcamera package makes the same Hawkeye show up again. So it’s definitely not a wiring or connection problem.

Agreed. The older release had the required tuning file and the newer release is missing it. The No static properties warning is also consistent with the sensor data not being picked up, but the fatal part is the missing IPA config arducam_64mp.json.

Is there anything I can do other than staying on the old version forever? I’d prefer not to be pinned to the previous release if there’s a proper fix.

For now the reliable workaround is to revert to the previous version, which you’ve already confirmed restores detection. If you want to stay on the newer version, you can install the Arducam libcamera manually instead. Follow the steps at Product Q&A: Your Questions Answered - #21 by Dion and that should get the Hawkeye registering again.

To summarize: the latest libcamera package is missing the arducam_64mp.json tuning/IPA configuration file, so the Hawkeye camera helper can’t be created and the camera fails to register. The immediate fix is reverting to the previous version, or manually installing the Arducam libcamera using the steps I linked above.
