Arducam Hawkeye 64MP camera not working on Ubuntu 22.04 Raspberry Pi 4B

Hi, I’m trying to get my Arducam hawkeye-64MP working on Ubuntu and hitting a wall. It works fine on Raspberry Pi OS, but I need to move this setup over to Ubuntu 22.04 (Jammy Jellyfish). I’m following the Arducam online documentation and running:

./install_pivariety_pkgs.sh

The script can’t find the matching libcamera package for Jammy Jellyfish. My setup: Raspberry Pi 4B 8 GB, Ubuntu 22.04, kernel 5.15.0-1035-raspi, hardware revision d03115. Is there any way to get the hawkeye-64MP running on Ubuntu, or can the install script be updated to include Jammy?

Thanks for the details. I checked the environment info you provided. Right now the 64MP camera (hawkeye-64MP) is not supported on Ubuntu OS. The corresponding libcamera package for Jammy Jellyfish isn’t available, so the install script doesn’t have a matching package to pull. That’s why it works on Raspberry Pi OS but not on your Ubuntu 22.04 build. There’s no Ubuntu package for the 64MP at this time.

Thanks for the quick reply. Do you know if 64MP support on Ubuntu is planned? If so, is there any rough timeframe? I’m trying to figure out whether to wait or switch the approach.

I checked, and at present there is no plan to release the 64MP driver on Ubuntu OS, so I don’t have a timeframe to share either.

That’s frustrating, but thanks for being upfront. I’m still poking at this on my own — has anyone in the community hacked the 64MP to work on Ubuntu and published the process? I keep running into the same missing libcamera – Jammy Jellyfish package when I run ./install_pivariety_pkgs.sh. Same hardware: Raspberry Pi 4B 8 GB, Ubuntu 22.04, kernel 5.15.0-1035-raspi, hardware revision d03115.

I’m not aware of a published community hack for getting the hawkeye-64MP going on Ubuntu. The blocker is the same one you’re hitting: the libcamera Jammy Jellyfish package simply isn’t there for this sensor, so the install script can’t complete. If I hear of a working community process I’ll update here, but I don’t have one to point to right now.

Got it. In the meantime, while I keep trying to make the 64MP work on Ubuntu, can you recommend any Arducam camera that is actually supported on Ubuntu? I’d rather have a fallback module I know works in this environment.

To be straight with you: our Arducam camera modules are based on the official Raspberry Pi OS, and they can’t be used on Raspberry Pi Ubuntu OS. I don’t have an alternative Arducam camera recommendation for Ubuntu, since the modules rely on the official OS. If you need the 64MP, your working path is the official Raspberry Pi OS.
