Arducam B0492R no cameras available after driver install on Raspberry Pi 5

Hi everyone,

I have an Arducam B0492R that has never worked on my Raspberry Pi 5 (Bookworm, 256 GB SSD). I followed the CamArray quick start guide at Quick Start Guide for Arducam CamArray HAT Kit - Arducam Wiki.

After running:

./install_pivariety_pkgs.sh -p kernel_driver

I tried:

libcamera-still -t 5000

and libcamera fails with these errors:

[0:00:41.611710213] [1612] INFO Camera camera_manager.cpp:284 libcamera v0.2.0+46-075b54d5

But dmesg does see the sensor:

[ 4.662413] rp1-cfe 1f00110000.csi: found subdevice /axi/pcie@120000/rp1/i2c@88000/arducam_pivariety@c

[ 4.958763] rp1-cfe 1f00110000.csi: Using sensor arducam-pivariety 6-000c for capture

So the hardware seems detected, but libcamera still says no cameras available. Has anyone run into this?

Thanks for posting the logs. The dmesg output looks normal for detection, but I need more context from your full system. Can you run the bug report tool and send me the file?

Steps:

  1. Reboot the Pi.
  2. Download the tool:

wget -O arducam-camera-bug-report https://github.com/ketai-dhr/arducam-camera-bug-report/releases/download/tools/arducam-camera-bug-report

  1. Make it executable:

chmod +x ./arducam-camera-bug-report

  1. Run it:

./arducam-camera-bug-report

That creates arducam-bug-report.txt in the current directory. Please send that file to me in a private message instead of pasting the whole thing here, since it can contain a lot of system info.

Just sent the bug report over PM. In the meantime, here’s the full picture of what I did and what I’m seeing.

Environment:

Commands I ran:

  • ./install_pivariety_pkgs.sh -p kernel_driver
  • libcamera-still -t 5000
  • sudo dmesg | grep -i arducam

libcamera-still output:

[0:00:41.611710213] [1612] INFO Camera camera_manager.cpp:284 libcamera v0.2.0+46-075b54d5

dmesg output:

Other attempts:

  • I’ve also tried various online tutorials and editing /boot/config.txt, but the result is always the same ‘no cameras available’.

Thanks, the bug report confirms what I suspected.

Your kernel is 6.1.73. On that kernel, the Pi config file has moved from /boot/config.txt to /boot/firmware/config.txt. If dtoverlay=arducam-pivariety is still sitting in the old /boot/config.txt, it is being ignored.

First, put the overlay in the correct file:

sudo nano /boot/firmware/config.txt

Go to the bottom and add it under [all]:

[all]
dtoverlay=arducam-pivariety

Then reboot.

The second part of the problem is the stock libcamera build. The missing arducam-pivariety.json IPA error means you don’t have the Arducam customized libcamera. Install it with:

wget -O install_pivariety_pkgs.sh https://github.com/ArduCAM/Arducam-Pivariety-V4L2-Driver/releases/download/install_script/install_pivariety_pkgs.sh
chmod +x install_pivariety_pkgs.sh
./install_pivariety_pkgs.sh -p libcamera_dev
./install_pivariety_pkgs.sh -p libcamera_apps

After that, test again with:

libcamera-still -t 5000

Summary: move dtoverlay=arducam-pivariety to /boot/firmware/config.txt under [all], reboot, then install the Arducam libcamera_dev and libcamera_apps packages. The stock libcamera doesn’t ship the arducam-pivariety.json/IPA support, which is why the camera helper couldn’t be created.
