Arducam B016712MP PTZ camera not detected; python opencv apt error on Raspberry Pi 5

Hi all, I’m having a hard time getting an Arducam B016712MP PTZ camera to work on my Raspberry Pi 5. The camera just isn’t detected at all. I followed the setup video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pgE03ASm76E) step by step, but nothing shows up. When I run the apt-get command for OpenCV it errors out and says ‘python opencv does not exist’. I’m starting to think the module is DOA. Also, while I’m here - can this camera shoot higher than 2028 x 1520 at 40fps on the Pi 5? I’m after better image fidelity.

Welcome! Let’s dig in. Can you share a bit more about your setup - which OS are you running on the Pi 5, and how is the camera connected? Are you using the PTZ demo code from PTZ-Camera-Controller/B016712MP at master · ArduCAM/PTZ-Camera-Controller · GitHub? How are you triggering image capture when you run it? If you can post any logs and a photo or two of the wiring, that would help a lot.

Sure. Here are the logs and photos of how I’ve got it hooked up:

I’m following the video guide I linked earlier. I never got the original module to work, not once.

Thanks, that’s useful. One thing I want to rule out first - in the PTZ demo code, the image capture is triggered with the ‘c’ key. If you’re waiting for it to save a file automatically, it won’t happen. Are you pressing ‘c’ to capture? Also, could you share the dtoverlay line from your /boot/firmware/config.txt? A wrong overlay setting can stop the camera from being detected.

Quick update - I swapped the module for another one and also tried it on a different Pi 5, and now the camera works. So the original unit was probably DOA. I didn’t get a chance to try the ‘c’ key capture on the original since it wouldn’t even show up. Still no idea what the actual cause was. And back to my earlier question - is there any way to get higher than 2028 x 1520 at 40fps on the Pi 5 for better image fidelity?

Glad it’s working now. Since it works after swapping both the module and the Pi and the problem doesn’t reproduce, the original module being DOA is the most likely explanation. For future reference, make sure the device tree overlay is set correctly in /boot/firmware/config.txt: change ‘dtoverlay=imx477,cam0’ to ‘dtoverlay=imx477’, save the file, then reboot. The demo code for the B016712MP is at PTZ-Camera-Controller/B016712MP at master · ArduCAM/PTZ-Camera-Controller · GitHub, and image capture is triggered with the ‘c’ key. If you want to test the original module further, you can generate a bug report:

  1. Reboot the device
  2. wget -O arducam-camera-bug-report https://github.com/Dion4cen/arducam-camera-bug-report/releases/download/Tool/arducam-camera-bug-report
  3. chmod +x ./arducam-camera-bug-report
  4. ./arducam-camera-bug-report
That produces arducam-bug-report.txt in the current directory - attach it here and we can take a closer look. On the resolution question, I need to check the available sensor modes for the IMX477 on the Pi 5 before I can give you a reliable answer.
