Arducam 8MP PTZ IMX219 motors move but no camera on kernel 6.1.19-v8+

Hi everyone, I just got the 8MP PTZ Arducam with focus and zoom (imx219). The focus and zoom motors move fine, but the camera itself isn’t working at all — no image. My setup: Hardware Revision d03114, kernel 6.1.19-v8+. Has anyone seen this?

Can you try installing the kernel driver package and paste the output? Run:
./install_pivariety_pkgs.sh -p kernel_driver

Here’s what I get:
./install_pivariety_pkgs.sh -p kernel_driver
Cannot find the corresponding package, please send the following information to [email protected]
Hardware Revision: d03114
Kernel Version: 6.1.19-v8+
Package: kernel_driver – bullseye-v5
You are using an unsupported kernel version, please install the official SD Card image(do not execute rpi-update): Raspberry Pi OS downloads – Raspberry Pi

That error means the script can’t find a matching package for your kernel. Please follow the steps in this FAQ: Install_pivariety_pkgs.sh update and FAQ — re-download the script and run it with the -d flag.

I followed that FAQ and ran:
cd ~
wget -O install_pivariety_pkgs.sh https://github.com/ArduCAM/Arducam-Pivariety-V4L2-Driver/releases/download/install_script/install_pivariety_pkgs.sh
chmod +x ./install_pivariety_pkgs.sh
sudo ./install_pivariety_pkgs.sh -d
It installed without any error this time, but the camera still doesn’t work.

Let’s get a full bug report to see what’s actually loaded on the system. Run these commands:
wget -O arducam-camera-bug-report https://github.com/ketai-dhr/arducam-camera-bug-report/releases/download/tools/arducam-camera-bug-report
chmod +x ./arducam-camera-bug-report
./arducam-camera-bug-report
Then send me the generated file.

I ran the bug report tool and I’ve sent you the arducam-bug-report.txt through private message.

Thanks, I checked the bug report. Your system is actually running kernel 5.10.92, not 6.1.19. That’s the problem — 5.10.92 isn’t compatible with the camera driver. Please burn a fresh SD card with the latest Bullseye OS (kernel 5.15.84) and start from scratch.

OK, I installed the latest Bullseye OS 5.15.84 from scratch, but the camera still isn’t working. The imx219 is now registered at /base/soc/i2c0mux/i2c@1/imx219@10. I ran libcamera-hello and got this:
libEGL warning: DRI2: failed to authenticate
Made X/EGL preview window

I’ve also sent a new bug report (2023-03-20) privately. Could we maybe do a remote session to sort this out?

I looked at the second bug report and your libcamera-hello output. The sensor is registering, but your system is still running kernel 6.1.19 — even though you said you installed Bullseye 5.15.84. That’s still the unsupported kernel, so the camera driver keeps failing.

Wait, I’m confused. Earlier you said the system was on 5.10.92 and I should install 5.15.84. So I downloaded the latest kernel v5.15 from the official Raspberry Pi page and burned a fresh SD card, but uname -r still reports 6.1.19-v8+ — same as my old OS. How do I actually verify 5.15.84 is installed, or how do I change the kernel version?

The bug report shows you’re still on 6.1.19-v8+. I’ve sent you a screenshot privately showing that. Can you run uname -r on the Pi right now and paste the exact output?

I ran uname -r and it returns 6.1.19-v8+. I also re-downloaded the latest kernel v5.15 image from Raspberry Pi OS downloads – Raspberry Pi and burned it to a fresh SD card, but uname -r still returns 6.1.19-v8+.

So the current conclusion is: the camera driver requires the actual running kernel to be Bullseye 5.15.84, but your Pi is still booting 6.1.19-v8+ even after flashing. That’s the unsupported kernel, so the driver fails. The image you’re flashing is likely the newer default Raspberry Pi OS (which ships a 6.1.x kernel) rather than the legacy Bullseye 5.15.84 image. Until uname -r actually reports 5.15.84, the camera won’t work — that’s where we’re stuck for now.
