Arducam 64MP returns only 16Mpix photos on RPi4

I’ve tried every possible variation. Rpi4 4GB, Rpi4 8GB, 32bit, 64bit. CMA-512 … everything. New installs. All according to the instructions.

Unfortunately the camera still only saves 16Mpix photos even if I switch the mode to --mode 9152:6944

Use - - width and - - height

When I use --width it seems that the photos are only enlarged, not the native resolution.

According to the documentation, the camera should capture 64Mpix natively even without using mode.

if I use -r switch and —mode with max resolution, libcamera saves 16Mpix jpeg and 64Mpix raw. But I don’t need a raw.

I’ve tried just about everything. The only way I’ve managed to save a 64Mpix photo is with a Python script and manual focus.

#!/usr/bin/python3

import time

from picamera2 import Picamera2

picam2 = Picamera2()
#picam2.set_logging(Picamera2.DEBUG)

capture_config = picam2.create_still_configuration()

picam2.configure(capture_config)
#picam2.set_controls({"AfMode": 1 ,"AfTrigger": 0})
picam2.set_controls({"AfMode": 0, "LensPosition": 428.0})
picam2.start()
time.sleep(2)

picam2.capture_file("demo1.jpg")

Hi,
We have set the default 16mp resolution when you want to store an image in 64 mp pix with libcamera. Because the 64 MP pix are too large for storage on the current Raspberry Pi device. I add the cma-512 in the config.txt file and capture a 64mp image with autofocus via the script below:

import time

from picamera2 import Picamera2

picam2 = Picamera2()
#picam2.set_logging(Picamera2.DEBUG)

capture_config = picam2.create_still_configuration(main={"size": (9152, 6944)})

picam2.configure(capture_config)
picam2.set_controls({"AfMode": 1 ,"AfTrigger": 0})
# picam2.set_controls({"AfMode": 0, "LensPosition": 428.0})
picam2.start()
time.sleep(2)

picam2.capture_file("demo1.jpg")

config.txt file:

Thank you for your help.

I have tried the script and it saves the 64Mp photo.
But unfortunately without autofocus.
Probably because the preview is not running and autofocus does not work on high resolution.

Hi,
I will manage to modify the script for previewing and autofocus.

The New Year’s Holiday is coming, so I may give it to you next year :rofl:

Wish you a happy new year in advance!

Looks like I figured it out. Thanks to the high resolution and low FPS, the camera takes quite a long time to focus.
The solution was to add a very long pause.

import time

from picamera2 import Picamera2

picam2 = Picamera2()

capture_config = picam2.create_still_configuration()
picam2.configure(capture_config)
picam2.set_controls({"AfMode": 1 ,"AfTrigger": 0})
# picam2.set_controls({"AfMode": 0, "LensPosition": 428.0})
picam2.start()
time.sleep(30)

picam2.capture_file("demo1.jpg")

So, is it true that libcamera-still just enlarge 16mp photo when you use 64mp resolution or not?

Thanks.

Hi,
If you use the libcamera-still command to save 64mp image, it will store the default 16mp due to the large date. However, it will be okay on previewing with viewfinder-width viewfinder-height in the resolution 64 mp.

Something should be added.
You can store an image by the scripts in the above threads.

Hi Dion, @fundix
A bit confused here.

Cannot assure libcamera-still is not working properly, seems dump correct size image, @fundix How do you know is a reescaled image? Info also dumps different stream configurations.

EDIT:

Reverted to libcamera-apps 0.0.7 and libcamera-dev 0.0.7 (Was the release before the downgrade to 16mp) Results are the same, attached on Yandex drive.

The fact that the photo is only enlarged via libcamera can be seen either at 100% magnification, where there are no extra details compared to 16Mix (for example, small text is not more readable) and in the dark parts there are visible streaks of noise. You can also see it in the size of the jpeg file, from libcamera I make 64Mpix photos smaller than via python script.
