Arducam 64MP camera probe fails with error -5 on Raspberry Pi 4 64-bit OS

Hi all, my Arducam 64MP camera has stopped working on my Raspberry Pi 4 4GB running the official 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS. It used to work fine, but now I get this in dmesg on every boot:

arducam_64mp: probe of 10-001a failed with error -5

The camera preview never comes up. I’ve already rebooted a few times and nothing changes. Any idea what that -5 means?

Welcome! A -5 on the probe usually means the driver can’t talk to the sensor at address 0x1a, which often points to a connection issue. Can you run the camera bug report tool and also reseat the camera connector?

wget -O arducam-camera-bug-report https://github.com/ketai-dhr/arducam-camera-bug-report/releases/download/tools/arducam-camera-bug-report
chmod +x ./arducam-camera-bug-report
./arducam-camera-bug-report

That writes arducam-bug-report.txt in the current directory — please send it over. Then unplug the camera ribbon from the board, plug it back in firmly, and try previewing again. If reseating doesn’t bring it back, we’ll need to dig deeper.

I ran the report and reseated the connector several times, but the error is still the same. I’ve PM’d you the new arducam-bug-report.txt.

Some more detail on my setup: Raspberry Pi 4 4GB, official 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS. I’ve tested kernel 5.15.84 (both 32-bit and 64-bit) and kernel 6.1.19. Driver and libcamera were installed per the Arducam Quick Start Guide, and I have cma-512 and arducam_64mp set in config.txt.

What I’ve tried so far:

  • Unplugged/re-plugged the camera connector — same error.
  • Fresh Raspberry Pi OS from Imager (32-bit and 64-bit, kernel 5.15.84), reinstalled driver and libcamera, set cma-512 and arducam_64mp — same error.
  • Fresh OS again, updated everything (kernel 6.1.19), only changed the overlays since the driver should already be present — same error.
  • On 6.1.19 I also installed libcamera_dev and the apps from the script — same error.

Thanks, that rules out a lot. The overlay/driver setup sounds correct, and since it fails on multiple kernels it’s not likely a specific kernel regression. Next I’d check the physical path: do you have another flat cable you can test with? Also, if you have a multimeter, check continuity between the camera module and the Pi side on the flex, and measure the voltages on the camera board. Those readings will help narrow down whether it’s the cable/connector or the module itself.

I swapped in a different flat cable and verified with a multimeter that the camera and Pi are physically connected end to end. I also measured the voltages on the camera board — I’ll PM you the marked-up photo. The readings look normal, but I still get arducam_64mp: probe of 10-001a failed with error -5 every time.

Is there anything else I can try, or does this point to the module being dead?

Based on everything you’ve tested — reseating, fresh OS on 32-bit and 64-bit, kernel 5.15.84 and 6.1.19, correct overlays, different cable, and good continuity/voltage readings — the software side looks fine and the Pi appears to reach the module electrically, but the sensor still isn’t responding on the I2C bus. That really points to a fault on the camera module itself rather than a configuration problem.

At this point I don’t think there’s a software workaround that will bring this particular unit back. I’ll follow up with you directly about the next steps for the hardware.
