Having a rough time with my Arducam 64MP on a Pi 4. It just won’t show up. I’ve spent hours on this — reflashed the SD card multiple times, went back to older kernel versions, tried a bunch of things, and it’s still dead. The camera never gets detected. Wondering if anyone else has run into this.
Sorry you’re hitting this. Can you post your system details (hardware revision, kernel version, OS codename, arch) and also your current /boot/config.txt? That’ll help narrow it down.
Sure, here’s what I’ve got:
- Hardware Revision: b03140
- Kernel Version: 6.1.19-v8+
- OS Codename: bookworm
- ARCH: aarch64
Thanks. Can you also run the Arducam installer for libcamera_apps and paste the output? I want to see which package it’s trying to pick. And grab the full /boot/config.txt when you get a chance.
Here’s the install attempt:
./install_pivariety_pkgs.sh -p libcamera_apps

That’s the apps package. Did you also try the kernel driver package? That error usually comes with a second one complaining about the kernel. Paste that too if you saw it, plus your /boot/config.txt.
Yep, I saw this earlier as well:

You are using an unsupported kernel version, please install the official SD Card image(do not execute rpi-update):
https://www.raspberrypi.com/software/operating-systems/
I don’t think I ran rpi-update though, just an image I had lying around.
Understood. Now the /boot/config.txt is the important part — can you paste the whole thing?
Here it is:
[cm4]
# Enable host mode on the 2711 built-in XHCI USB controller.
# This line should be removed if the legacy DWC2 controller is required
# (e.g. for USB device mode) or if USB support is not required.
otg_mode=1
dtoverlay=arducam_64mp
dtoverlay=arducam_64mp,cam1
[all]
dtoverlay=vc4-kms-v3d,cma-512
[pi4]
# Run as fast as firmware / board allows
arm_boost=1
[all]
dtoverlay=arducam_64mp
Found it. The overlay name is wrong. It should be arducam-64mp with a hyphen, not arducam_64mp with an underscore. You’ve got the underscore version in several places, which is why the camera never binds correctly. Run:
sudo nano /boot/config.txt
and add dtoverlay=arducam-64mp under the [all] section at the bottom, then reboot so it takes effect.
That was it! I changed the overlay to dtoverlay=arducam-64mp, rebooted, and the camera shows up now. Can’t believe it was an underscore vs a hyphen this whole time. Thank you!
Glad that sorted it. Yeah, device tree overlay names are character-sensitive, and the Arducam 64MP overlay specifically is arducam-64mp (hyphen). If any of the old underscore lines are still in there, remove them so you don’t end up with duplicate or conflicting overlays.
Me again, a bit later. I ended up reflashing with a different image that has gstreamer, libcamera, and libcamera-apps built from source. Now libcamera-still --list-cameras says No cameras available! even though /boot/config.txt has dtoverlay=arducam-64mp. I did NOT install the driver before running sudo apt-get upgrade — does the driver come automatically with the upgrade? Because trying to install it via the script fails with the unsupported kernel version error again.
Latest installer run:
./install_pivariety_pkgs.sh -p libcamera_apps

No, the Arducam V4L2 driver doesn’t come in with a normal apt upgrade, so that’s likely part of it. Can you post your current environment (hardware revision, kernel, arch), the current /boot/config.txt, and the output of:
libcamera-still --list-cameras
dmesg | grep 64mp
uname -a
plus the exact installer error you’re seeing now?
Current environment:
- Hardware Revision: b03140
- Kernel Version: 6.1.19-v8+ (#1637 SMP PREEMPT Tue Mar 14 11:11:47 GMT 2023 aarch64 GNU/Linux)
- Architecture: aarch64
/boot/config.txt:
[cm4]
otg_mode=1
dtoverlay=arducam-64mp
dtoverlay=arducam-64mp,cam1
[all]
dtoverlay=vc4-kms-v3d,cma-512
[pi4]
arm_boost=1
[all]
dtoverlay=arducam-64mp
Other settings in there: dtparam=i2c_arm=on, dtparam=audio=on, camera_auto_detect=1, display_auto_detect=1, dtoverlay=vc4-kms-v3d, max_framebuffers=2, arm_64bit=1, disable_overscan=1.
Thanks. The overlay lines look correct now. Can you paste the actual command outputs? Especially dmesg, since that tells us whether the sensor is being probed at the i2c level even if libcamera doesn’t list it.
Here you go:
pi@raspberrypi:~ $ libcamera-still --list-cameras
No cameras available!
pi@raspberrypi:~ $ dmesg | grep 64mp
[ 0.079870] platform fe801000.csi: Fixed dependency cycle(s) with /soc/i2c0mux/i2c@1/arducam_64mp@1a

pi@raspberrypi:~ $ uname -a

Installer error:
Cannot find the corresponding package, please send the following information to [email protected]
Hardware Revision: b03140
Kernel Version: 6.1.19-v8+
Package: 64mp_pi_hawk_eye_kernel_driver -- bullseye-arm64
You are using an unsupported kernel version, please install the official SD Card image(do not execute rpi-update): https://www.raspberrypi.com/software/operating-systems/
I tried installing the driver with:
wget -O install_pivariety_pkgs.sh https://github.com/ArduCAM/Arducam-Pivariety-V4L2-Driver/releases/download/install_script/install_pivariety_pkgs.sh; chmod +x install_pivariety_pkgs.sh; /install_pivariety_pkgs.sh -p 64mp_pi_hawk_eye_kernel_driver
Okay, a couple of things going on. The overlay is now correct — dmesg shows arducam_64mp 10-001a: Device found Arducam 64MP., so the sensor is being detected at the i2c level. But that alone doesn’t make libcamera list it; you still need the matching V4L2 driver package actually installed.
The bigger problem is the kernel. 6.1.19-v8+ from rpi-update (or a non-stock image) isn’t supported by the installer — it’s looking for bullseye-arm64 here and can’t find a matching package, so it bails with the unsupported kernel version message. The driver also doesn’t come in via sudo apt-get upgrade.
Current conclusion/workaround: stick with the official Raspberry Pi SD card image (no rpi-update), install the Arducam driver before running apt upgrade, and keep the overlay as dtoverlay=arducam-64mp. The No cameras available! is consistent with the driver never actually being installed on this kernel. I don’t have a clean fix that works on 6.1.19-v8+ right now — it’s a kernel/package mismatch.
