Hi all, I’m stuck with my Arducam 64MP camera. It’s connected but the Pi just doesn’t seem to see it at all. Tried a few things myself but no luck so far. Any pointers on where to start?
Hey, happy to help. Could you share a few details so I know what we’re working with? Specifically: the hardware revision of the board, the kernel version (uname -r), and which driver package you installed for the 64MP camera.
Sure, here’s what I have:
- Hardware Revision: d03114
- Kernel Version: 6.1.19-v8+
- Package: 64mp_pi_hawk_eye_kernel_driver – bullseye-arm64-v5
And when I try to run it, I get this in the output:
You are using an unsupported kernel version, please install the official SD Card image(do not execute rpi-update): Raspberry Pi OS downloads – Raspberry Pi
That message is basically the root cause. The 64mp_pi_hawk_eye_kernel_driver package (bullseye-arm64-v5) doesn’t support kernel 6.1.19-v8+. That kernel typically shows up after running rpi-update, which pulls in test kernels that aren’t supported by the driver. The cleanest fix is to flash the official Raspberry Pi OS image from that link and avoid rpi-update. Have you run rpi-update on this card at some point?
Yeah, I did run rpi-update a while back to grab a newer kernel. That would explain the 6.1.19-v8+ version then. Do I really need to reflash the whole card, or is there something I can try in the meantime to at least get the camera detected?
Reflashing with the official image is the proper long-term fix so you’re back on a supported kernel, but there’s also a device tree overlay you’ll need regardless. To enable the camera, edit the config file:
sudo nano /boot/config.txt
Then add this line under the [all] section at the bottom:
dtoverlay=arducam-64mp
Save, exit, and reboot the Pi for it to take effect.
Okay, I added dtoverlay=arducam-64mp under [all] in /boot/config.txt and rebooted. Just checking the camera now, give me a minute…
Sounds good. Make sure the line ended up under the [all] section and not accidentally inside another block, then double-check it’s detected after the reboot.
It’s working now! Camera shows up and I can capture frames. Thanks, that did it.
Glad it’s sorted. To wrap up: the arducam-64mp device tree overlay has to be added to /boot/config.txt (under [all]) for the Arducam 64MP camera to be enabled, followed by a reboot. And for the kernel side, stick to an official Raspberry Pi SD Card image without running rpi-update so you don’t end up on an unsupported kernel version like 6.1.19-v8+ with the bullseye-arm64-v5 driver package.
