Hey everyone, I’m having trouble getting my Arducam 2MP Mini Module Camera Shield (OV2640) working with my Arduino board. The camera simply isn’t being detected at all. I’ve double and triple-checked all the physical connections against the official documentation, and everything seems to be seated properly. I’m also using the sample code straight from the official Arducam GitHub repository — no modifications. I even went through the Arducam Wiki for setup and troubleshooting guides. Nothing has helped. The board powers up fine, but the camera module just won’t show up. Has anyone run into this before?
Thanks for reaching out. Before we dig deeper, can you confirm a few things about your setup?
- Which specific Arduino board are you using (Uno, Mega, etc.)?
- Are you using the SPI or I2C interface for the camera shield?
- Can you post the exact sample sketch you’re running? Sometimes a mismatch between the board definition and the camera model in the code can cause detection failures.
Also, just to rule out the basics: are you powering the Arduino via USB or an external supply? The camera shield can be a bit power-hungry and a weak USB port can cause weird behavior.
I’m using an Arduino Uno R3, connected via SPI. The sketch is the ArduCAM_Mini_2MP_Plus_VideoStreaming example from the official repo — I haven’t changed a single line. Power is through USB, but I’ve also tried a 9V barrel jack adapter to rule out power issues, same result.
I actually recorded a couple of short videos so you can see exactly what’s happening:
The second video shows the whole setup and connections. The first one shows the serial output — just getting nothing back from the camera module. No ACK, no detection, just hangs at initialization.
Thanks for the videos, those are really helpful. I can see from the serial output in the first video that the code is reaching the camera initialization routine but it’s failing to get a response from the OV2640 sensor — the SPI transactions seem to complete but the camera ID readback is returning all zeros or garbage, which suggests the sensor isn’t responding at all.
In the second video, your wiring looks correct from what I can see — CS, MOSI, MISO, SCK, GND, VCC all look like they’re going to the right pins. The shield is seated properly on the Uno.
Here’s what I’m thinking: since you’ve already ruled out the obvious stuff (connections, code, documentation, power), we need to figure out whether this is a hardware defect with your specific camera module or a software/configuration issue on your Arduino side. The most reliable way to do that is a hardware isolation test.
Here’s what I’d suggest:
- Get a brand new Arducam 2MP Mini Module Camera Shield with OV2640 Lens — a fresh unit from stock.
- Keep everything else identical — same Arduino Uno, same sketch, same wiring arrangement, same power setup.
- Swap only the camera shield and see if the new module is detected.
- Compare the behavior:
- If the new unit works, then your original camera module is likely defective.
- If the new unit also fails in exactly the same way, then the problem is probably on the software/configuration side (or potentially the Arduino board itself).
This test keeps all variables constant except the camera hardware, so it’ll give us a clear answer on where to focus next. Let me know if you’re able to try this and what results you get.
