Arducam 12MP IMX708 Quad Camera Kit shows camera not found on Raspberry Pi

Hi everyone. I’ve got an Arducam 12MP IMX708 Quad Camera Kit (wide angle, stereo synchronized) hooked up to a Raspberry Pi. It worked great for about a week, but now I’m getting ‘camera not found’. I’ve tried it on two different Raspberry Pi boards and both throw the same error. The card lights up and looks like it’s fine, but the cameras just aren’t detected. Any ideas what could cause that?

Hi, that ‘camera not found’ error is usually either the overlay config or the physical connection to the HAT. Can you confirm whether you’ve modified /boot/firmware/config.txt? And can you double-check that all four cameras are properly seated on the HAT board?

I did modify the config file - I added dtoverlay=imx708 to /boot/firmware/config.txt. All four cameras are connected to the HAT board and I’ve re-seated them. I also tested on 2 different Raspberry Pi boards, and the card still lights up like normal. One question - if just one of the four cameras is defective, would the whole thing fail with ‘camera not found’?

Yes, a single bad camera or a bad connection on one channel can stop the whole array from being detected. To narrow it down, could you post a few photos of the connections at both the Raspberry Pi end and the camera end of the HAT? Also, can you generate a bug report for us? After a reboot, run these commands:
wget -O arducam-camera-bug-report https://github.com/Dion4cen/arducam-camera-bug-report/releases/download/Tool/arducam-camera-bug-report
chmod +x ./arducam-camera-bug-report
./arducam-camera-bug-report
That will create arducam-bug-report.txt in the current directory. Please share that file.

After running a bunch of tests, I’m now getting a big display error instead. Here’s what it looks like:

Honestly at this point the card is feeling too fragile/unstable for my project.

Thanks for the image. Does the kit show a purple stripe right now, or did it during any of the tests? Also, have the FFC cables been changed at all? What you’re seeing looks like unstable signal transmission, and in most cases that comes down to the MIPI cable/connection rather than the board itself. If you can confirm the purple stripe and whether the FFCs were swapped, that should help us narrow it down. For now the working theory is an unstable MIPI/FFC connection.
