Hi, hoping someone can point me in the right direction. I’ve got an Arducam AR0234 Pivariety camera on a Raspberry Pi 4B running Raspberry Pi OS 64-bit (Bullseye), kernel 6.1.21-v8+. The camera just won’t show up. When I run libcamera-still I get ‘ERROR: *** no cameras available ***’. There’s a whole pile of errors before that: ‘Configuration file arducam-pivariety.json not found for IPA module raspberrypi’, ‘[read32] Failed to set I2C address’ repeated a bunch of times, ‘Failed to load a suitable IPA library’, and ‘Failed to register camera arducam-pivariety 10-000c: -22’. I also noticed warnings while installing the pivariety packages, something like ‘W: Repository is broken: libcamera0:arm64 (= 0~git20230321+74d023d8-1) has no Size information’ and the same kind of thing for libcamera-apps. Not sure if that’s related. Any ideas?
Can you check your /boot/config.txt? This camera is sensitive to an overlay parameter. The issue is usually that you have this line under the [all] section:
dtoverlay=arducam-pivariety,media-controller=0
The media-controller=0 parameter needs to be removed for this camera. Run:
sudo nano /boot/config.txt
and change that line to just:
dtoverlay=arducam-pivariety
Save, reboot the Pi, and see if the camera is detected afterwards.
Thanks for the suggestion. I changed the line to dtoverlay=arducam-pivariety and rebooted, but it’s still showing no cameras available. Here’s my current /boot/config.txt:
dtparam=audio=on
start_x=1
display_auto_detect=1
#dtoverlay=vc4-kms-v3d
max_framebuffers=2
arm_64bit=1
disable_overscan=1
[cm4]
otg_mode=1
[pi4]
dtoverlay=vc4-fkms-v3d
[pi4]
arm_boost=1
[all]
gpu_mem=128
[all]
dtoverlay=arducam-pivariety
So the media-controller=0 is gone now, but still failing. Here’s the output of libcamera-still -t 5000 -n -o test.jpg:

Also when I ran ./install_pivariety_pkgs.sh I saw these warnings:
-p libcamera_dev: libcamera-dev:arm64 removed then reinstalled; W: Repository is broken: libcamera0:arm64 (= 0~git20230321+74d023d8-1) has no Size information

python3-picamera2 already newest (0.3.9-1)
I’ve rebooted a few times after making the change. Still stuck.
Thanks for the full logs. Since the errors are still there even after the overlay fix, I’d like to get a full diagnostic report from the device. Please reboot the Pi, then run these commands:
wget -O arducam-camera-bug-report https://github.com/ketai-dhr/arducam-camera-bug-report/releases/download/tools/arducam-camera-bug-report
chmod +x ./arducam-camera-bug-report
./arducam-camera-bug-report
That will create arducam-bug-report.txt in the current directory. Attach that file here and I’ll dig into it.
Ran the tool after a reboot as requested and got the arducam-bug-report.txt. I’ve attached it for you.
Thanks for the report. I’ve gone through it, but I’d like to take a closer look directly on the Pi to pin this down. I’ve sent you the remote support details via private message—please check your messages and share the session credentials at a time that works for you. Just a heads up, our support timezone is UTC+8, and the 22:00 option is for sales only so that slot isn’t available for remote support.
Quick update: I switched over to Raspberry Pi Bullseye 32-bit OS and now the Arducam quickstart instructions work fine, so that side is sorted. But I actually need the AR0234 to work under the Raspberry Pi Legacy Camera stack. I’m using AWS Greengrass and it uses raspistill to test camera access. Can the AR0234 be installed to work under the legacy camera stack, and if so, what config changes are needed?
Glad the quickstart is working on Bullseye 32-bit. Unfortunately the legacy camera stack isn’t supported for the AR0234—we don’t provide support for it, and our driver work is focused on the new camera stack (libcamera). So for AWS Greengrass you’d need to point it at libcamera-based access rather than raspistill. The camera does work on Bullseye 32-bit with the new stack, so I’d recommend sticking with that.
