Hi, hoping someone can help. I’ve got a 64MP camera that’s been failing ever since I did a fresh OS install on Nov 11. The Python script throws “camera init sequence did not complete” and honestly I haven’t changed anything since it was working before the reinstall. The strange part is it behaves differently depending on how I launch it — when I run the Python in Thonny it’s like it’s messing up, but when I run the same Python as an autostart it sort of works, then randomly fails with the same error again. Any ideas what’s going on here?
Sorry you’re running into this. A fresh OS install can sometimes leave the camera stack in a half-configured state, and the way it changes between Thonny and autostart usually points at a timing/enumeration thing rather than your code.
Can you generate a bug report for us first so we can see the actual init trace? Reboot the Pi, then run these:
Okay, ran it on a fresh reboot. It took a little while but it finished and I’ve got the arducam-bug-report.txt file. Attaching it now.
The error was the same as before while I was testing — “camera init sequence did not complete” — sometimes right away, sometimes after a few seconds if I run it as autostart.
Got the report, thanks. The log confirms the init sequence is timing out partway through and the sensor isn’t being talked to cleanly, which matches what you’re seeing with the random failures. Since it reproduces across both Thonny and autostart, I’d like to look at it directly on the hardware rather than keep guessing.
I’ve sent you the remote session details through private message — check your messages and let me know if the time works for you. If it does, we can go through it together.
Perfect. A couple of things to have ready before we start so we don’t lose time: keep the Pi booted and connected to the network, and make sure the camera ribbon cable is seated as it is now (don’t reseat anything yet — I want to see the failure state first).
During the session we’ll check the I2C detection and whether the sensor is being enumerated at all, then compare that against the bug report.
Thanks for the time on that. After going through it together, the camera module isn’t enumerating on I2C consistently and the init failure still happens on both Thonny and autostart, and it does it even on a clean boot with no other changes. That points at a fault on the camera module itself rather than anything in your OS install or your Python setup.
I’ll follow up with you privately about how we take it from here.
No problem at all. To wrap up the thread for anyone following along: the 64MP camera was throwing “camera init sequence did not complete” after a fresh OS install, and it failed differently under Thonny vs autostart. The bug report and the remote session both showed the module not enumerating consistently, so it’s being treated as a hardware fault on the camera module rather than a software fix.
I’ll continue with you over private message on the next steps. Feel free to post back here if anything changes in the meantime.
